How do I automatically calculate nutritional information?

Quick answer: Open a recipe, tap Edit, scroll to the Nutrition section, then tap Calculate nutrition. CookBook will estimate the nutritional values based on the ingredients in your recipe.

Automatically calculate nutrition for a recipe

  1. Open the recipe you want to calculate nutrition for.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Scroll down to the Nutrition section.
  4. Tap Calculate nutrition.
  5. CookBook will estimate calories, macros, and other nutrition values from the ingredients.

You can review and adjust anything before saving the recipe.

Tip: After you calculate and save nutrition on your recipes, CookBook can use that information to show daily calories, fat, carbs, and protein totals in the meal planner.

Add your own nutritional information

If you already know the nutrition values or want to enter them manually:

  1. Open the recipe and tap Edit.
  2. Scroll to the Nutrition section.
  3. Tap Edit in the nutrition area.
  4. Enter or paste the nutritional information.
  5. Tap Save.

Daily nutrition values

CookBook’s default daily nutrition values are based on USDA and FDA recommendations using a 2,000 calorie daily diet.

The default nutrition goals are:
Calories: 2,000 kcal
Total fat: 78 g, or 35% of daily calories
Carbohydrates: 275 g, or 55% of daily calories
Protein: 50 g, or 10% of daily calories

Set your own macro goals

You can customise your nutrition targets in Settings.

Go to Side menu → Settings → Nutrition goals and set your preferred targets for:

  • Calories
  • Total fat
  • Carbohydrates
  • Protein

CookBook estimates total calories from macros using standard nutrition calculations:

  • 1 g fat = 9 kcal
  • 1 g carbohydrates = 4 kcal
  • 1 g protein = 4 kcal

If your macro targets add up to a different calorie total than your daily calorie goal, the values may not match perfectly. Adjusting either your macro grams or your calorie goal will help keep them aligned.

If I change my nutrition goals, will all my recipe percentages update automatically?

No. If you change your daily nutrition goals, your saved recipes will not automatically update their displayed daily percentage values.

You will need to refresh the recipe for the updated percentages to be recalculated against your new nutrition goals.

Understanding the nutrition summary

When viewing a recipe, CookBook shows nutrition in two different ways.

The top nutrition infographic

The top infographic shows the split of calories in that recipe across carbs, fat and protein.

For example, it may show:
Carbs: 74% of calories
Total fat: 9% of calories
Protein: 17% of calories

This helps you quickly understand where most of the recipe’s calories are coming from.

As a general guide, a balanced recipe will often have a more even split between carbs, fat and protein, closer to thirds. However, the best split for you may depend on your own preferences, diet and nutrition goals.

Daily RDA Nutrition

The Daily RDA Nutrition section shows how much of your daily nutrition goal the recipe uses.

For example, if a recipe shows:
Calories: 430 kcal (25%)
That means the recipe contains 430 calories, which is 25% of your daily calorie goal.

This section can also show carbs, protein, total fat, saturated fat, fibre, cholesterol, sodium and other nutrition values where available.

To see the full personal RDA breakdown, tap the dropdown arrow beside Daily RDA Nutrition. This will expand the section and show each nutrition value with its amount and percentage of your daily goal.

Show or hide nutrition information

If you prefer not to display nutrition data, you can toggle it on or off.

  1. Open Side menu → Settings.
  2. Find the Nutrition display option.
  3. Turn it on or off depending on your preference.
